Joe Louis Reliford -- The World's Youngest Professional Baseball Player

Douglas, Georgia- Joe Louis Reliford was nurtured in the Deep South in the late 1940's and 1950's, one of 10 children raised by a single mother. To help his ailing mother, who suffered from arthritis, was a top priority. At age 4, Joe's father died from alcoholism. Frequently, Joe and a childhood pal would observe an all white minor league team from the railroad tracks. Then, suddenly, one day, he courageously crossed the tracks and sought employment. The team was named, the Fitzgerald Pioneers, a farm team for the Kansas City A's, now called the Oakland A's. At age 10, Joe represented the Pioneers, as their official Batboy, earning $68 every week. For two years, Joe traveled with the team, experiencing racial slurs and denied from eating in white restaurants. One scenario caused a walk out by the team at a diner. July 19, 1952, the Pioneers journeyed to Statesboro, Georgia. The Pioneers played the Statesboro Pilots, farm team for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Prof. Robert Jensen Talks About White Privilege, Gender Issues and Mass Murder

Robert Jensen is a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to teaching and research, Jensen writes for popular media, both alternative and mainstream. His opinion and analytic pieces on such subjects as foreign policy, politics, and race have appeared in papers and on websites around the world. He contributes to local organizing in Austin, TX, through his work with the Third Coast Activist Resource Center and the progressive community center 5604 Manor.Jensen’s latest book is Arguing for Our Lives: Critical Thinking in Crisis Times (City Lights, 2013). Grant Smith Discusses his Book Divert! Which Details Diversion of Nuclear Material to Israel

Grant Smith is the director of the The Institute for Research Middle Eastern Policy (IRmep). IRMEP is a Washington-based nonprofit organization that studies US-Middle East policy formulation. Founded in 2002, the Institute became an independent private non-profit tax-exempt organization in 2003.
